OPPORTUNITIES FOR PLAYWRIGHTS
Source Festival accepts Full-Length Play submissions by invitation only. Read about the 22 Finalists chosen for the 2016 Festival.
Each year, Source Festival produces 18 new 10-Minute Plays. Scripts are staged by a wide cross-section Washington theatre directors, from early career to seasoned veterans. The 18 selected playwrights receive a $100 stipend and 5 performances of their play in Source’s 100-seat black box theatre in DC’s buzzing Mid-City District. The Source Festival is driven by creativity, collaboration and invention. The most successful scripts tell an original story in a fresh distinctive voice. Other requirements are as follows:
- Plays may not have been previously produced or published and no upcoming productions are scheduled
- Playwrights may submit only one 10-Minute Play
- Plays may be no longer than 10 pages and must be submitted as a PDF
- Playwrights must be based in the United States. We are not currently accepting international submissions.
Playwrights were invited to submit 10-Minute scripts specifically related to the major themes in the selected Full-Length Plays for 2016. Those themes are:
DREAMS & DISCORD
Seeking plays that address the juxtaposition between the lives we lead and the lives we wish for. We urge the exploration of the potential tension/energy between commitment and desire. We want scripts that explore how these forces interact between dynamic characters (couples of all permutations, families, strangers in a specific environment, etc). [Inspired by BALLAST]
HEROES & HOME
Seeking plays that address our modern sense of belonging while contending with an aspect of bravery. Courage can take many different forms, and we are looking for scripts that reveal this contemporary perspective within a domestic environment. Updated twists on myths & legends might serve as one potential starting point, but we encourage you to branch out into other ideas. [Inspired by BURIED CITIES]
SECRETS & SOUND
seeking plays that explore a hidden truth or discovery. Your play must include a specific sound landscape or idea (such as cassette tapes, voicemail messages, vinyl, Siri, 8-track, etc), and be an active component of the play (as opposed to characters that happen to be musicians and play a drum on stage).
